There is a growing recognition that English tests
which only measure passive skills do not give an
adequate picture of a person's ability to use that
language. However, in spite of the recognized inadequacies
of passive tests, they continue to be used because
the few productive tests available are expensive
and require considerable time for marking and returning
of the results to the candidate. What is needed
is a test that combines the ease of administration
and reliability of a multiple-choice test with an
easily administered production test that can be
quickly scored. BETA-Express is our attempt to provide
such a test.
BETA-Express is built on the 28 years of experience
we have had with the Businessman's English Test
and Assessment (BETA I and II). That test battery
consists of a 210 item passive test (BETA I) which
is used as a screening device to decide who has
sufficient ability to have a chance of passing a
totally productive (writing and interview) test
(BETA II). Developments in testing theory and new
statistical procedures together with our experience
with the tens of thousands who have taken BETA I
and II have allowed us to shorten the multiple-choice
part of the test and combine it with a writing test
that can be quickly scored. An optional interview
is also available.

受動的なスキル（文法・語彙、リスニングおよびリーディング）のみ判定する英語テストでは能力を反映した結果が得られない、という認識が広まりつつあります。しかしながら、この種のテストが依然として採用され続けている事情として、受験できる能動的スキル（ライティングおよびスピーキング）測定テストが少なく、かつ高価であること、また、採点と受験者への結果送付にかなりの時間を要するということが言えます。したがって、実施が容易でかつ信頼性の高い多肢選択テストと、能動スキル測定テストとを組み合わせたテストの開発が待たれていました。もちろん、迅速に採点できるものでなくてはなりません。BETA-Express
こそがこのような要望を満たすことのできるテストであると確信しております。
この BETA-Express の礎となっているのは 28 年におよぶ BETA テスト （Businessmen's
English Test and Appraisal、BETA I ＝ 1 次試験と BETA
II ＝ 2 次試験の 2 段構成） の経験です。BETA の受験者は、200 問以上の多肢選択式問題からなる
BETA I をパスすることによって初めて BETA II を受験することができます。この BETA
II は、ライティングとインタビューから成り、徹底的に受験者の能動スキルを判定します。我々は、日々発達するテスト理論を研究するかたわら、約
20 万人もの受験者に BETA テストを実施してきた経験に新しい統計的処理を組み込み、BETA
テストの多肢選択部分を縮小すると同時に迅速な採点が可能なライティングテストを組み合わせる研究を続け、この度
BETA-Express の開発に成功しました。オプションとしてインタビューテストもご用意しています。
ライティングが加わった、時間的にもコスト面でも効率的な新しいテスト―これが BETA-Express

【スラッシャー博士の経歴】
1965年にミシガン大学で修士課程を修了し、1975年に同大学で博士号を取得（言語学）。
ミシガン大学 English Language Institute テスト部門のリサーチ・アシスタントおよび同
Institute ティーチング・フェローを経て、関西学院大学、国際基督教大学 (ICU)
で教鞭を執り、2002年3月に ICU を退官、現名誉教授。
英語テストに関する著書、講演多数。「ミシガン・テスト」"The Michigan
Test of English Language Proficiency"（J.
Upshur、M. Spaan 等と共著）、"E.L.I. Achievement
Series"（J. Upshur、P. Pillsbury と共著）の執筆者の一人として活躍。また、ILC
国際語学センターにてBETA (Businessmen's English Test
& Appraisal) を開発。現在は日本言語テスト学会 (JLTA) 会長を務め、国際言語テスト学会
(ILTA) にも所属している。 |
