関係詞節、接続詞、その他の文をつなぐ語句(therefore, furthermore, however, on the other hand, etc.)

 IELTSのエッセーの問題には、Topic(論題)とFocus(争点・論点)があります。

As technology continues to develop, many traditional skills, customs and ways of life are under threat. It has been argued that it is a waste of time trying to maintain such things.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this idea?

 一般論として、英語の文章を書く時には、Introduction(イントロダクション)からSupporting paragraphs=Main body(自分の意見を支持する段落=本論)へ、そして最後にConclusion (コンクルージョン)で終える基本的なパラグラフ構成に則って書くべきです。

Technology is increasing at a remarkable speed and this has led to great advances that have made our lives so much easier. As a consequence, many traditional practices are being lost as we accept more and more the benefits of modern technology. While some people claim that this is inevitable and that it is pointless to maintain such traditional ways of life, it could easily be argued that it is vitally important to keep traditional skills and ways of life.

It is generally believed that traditional ways and skills have developed over a long period of time to become what they are today. Therefore, they reflect our history and can tell us a lot about who we are. For instance, traditional house building practices in Japan illustrate the strong relationship Japanese people have had with nature. To lose such skills is to lose a part of our history and understanding of who we are and where we have come from. The connection we have with the past through traditional skills and ways of life means it is crucial for us to protect them in the face of advancing technology.

The ever increasing development of technology is having profound effects on our life. The impact is especially seen in relation to traditional skills and ways of life. However, such aspects should be maintained because they connect us to our history, and give us a sense of identity. This is why it is necessary to protect traditional skills and ways of life.

It has become popular for high school graduates to take a ‘gap year’ before entering university. It is claimed that travelling or working for a year before studying will benefit them personally and academically.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this idea?

After leaving high school, some graduates choose to go straight into university while others have a break from studying, and travel or work for a period of time. It has been said that taking a break from study has advantages for students on a personal and academic level. This is certainly true but it should be understood that there are dangers in taking time off at this important age.

First of all, by taking a ‘gap year’ young adults are able to get more real life experience. By this I mean, travelling or working will assist in the development of their general knowledge and understanding of different people from foreign countries or even their own country. Interacting with people from various cultures or socio-economic levels provides graduates with a wealth of knowledge about life and the way people live. This is why it is an advantage for high school graduates to take a gap year.

In addition, a ‘gap year’ allows a teenager to have more time to think about what they want to do in their future. Entering university straight after graduating from high school does not give people time to reflect upon their life and decide what is best for them. In fact, it often confuses people and they enter university courses they are unsure about, or have been pushed into by family, teachers and student counsellors. Therefore, taking a gap year is a positive move since it gives graduates time to think about what is best for them.

However, it has been argued that there are certain dangers in taking this time off. It is possible that these people may never return to their studies or may find it very difficult to readapt to a learning environment. For instance, a friend of mine entered the workforce after high school, has continued to work since then, and never thinks about commencing a university course. This is an unfortunate situation because academic qualifications are becoming vitally important in getting a good career. It is for such a reason that taking a gap year might be a negative step for some people.

Overall, it could be argued that it is best for graduates to take a ‘gap year’ as it provides them with many opportunities to broaden their horizons. However, it should be understood that dangers exist and that it is essential for graduates to return to their studies after their ‘gap year’.
