In this seminar, I'm going to be talking about one of my favorite topics, "terms of art." It's a topic I've been concerned about ever since I began trying to translate patent specifications. I'm going to discuss the questions: How important is it to know the lingo? What is the U.S. patent legal situation regarding terms of art? How important are terms of art during examination? Given that there may be advantages to using the "right" term of art, how can we find them? To answer this last question, I'll give you some tips and show you some online tricks I've learned over the years, including how to use the USPTO's patent classification definitions—a little-known, yet highly valuable resource for patent translators. -James Judge |
